On Memorial Day, we pause to thank those men and women who went to war for us and came home, and to remember those who didn’t. But mostly, like Private Ryan, we pray that we are worthy of their ultimate sacrifice.
Two-hundred-thirty-four years ago, our forefathers went to war with their former country of origin because they wanted a new way of life for this new land. This was to be the land not of rulers or sovereigns, but of free men of equal opportunity. A land where the elected head of the country is addressed as Mr. President, rather than your highness. To secure those rights, they went to war, expending their wealth, and lives to that goal.
From that day to this, men and women have at times of peril, when there was a threat to our freedoms, gone to war to protect us and our unique way of life. In no other land on Earth do people enjoy the same freedoms as us. These very special rights we have were bought and paid for by the blood of our fighting men and women. To not pay tribute would be a travesty.
But, to not be worthy of ttheir ultimate sacrifice would be a disgrace. When we memorialize these patriots, let us search our souls and honor these brave men and women by caring for and preserving this country and our way of life. That is the only true memorial to be laid at the foot of their tombs.
